This Day in Music

Today in music …

Hard Days Night

In 1964, The Beatles filmed the last day of train scenes for the movie ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’ Over the six days of filming aboard a moving train, The Beatles travelled more than 2,500 miles on the rails.

In 1966, The Beach Boys recorded ‘God Only Knows’. It became the B-side of ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ in the US. It was Brian Wilson’s song about his mother.

In 1968, Bob Dylan started a ten week run at No.1 on the UK chart with John Wesley Harding. The album marked Dylan’s return to acoustic music after three albums of electric rock music and reached No.2 on the US charts.

In 1970, Having recently changed their name from Earth to Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward made their concert debut at The Roundhouse, London.

In 1971, Led Zeppelin appeared at Leeds University, Leeds, England, during their ‘Back To The Clubs’ tour. This was the first tour which saw Zeppelin performing ‘Stairway To Heaven’, ‘Black Dog’ and ‘Going To California.’

1985, REO Speedwagon started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’.

Goodbye Leonard Nimoy

Sad to hear about the passing of Leonard Nimoy this morning. We booked him as a speaker on several occasions over the last 12 years. His lectures were outstanding.

More importantly, he was kind and gracious to everyone he met. And I can’t count how many times he answered Star Trek questions and posed for photos with people using the “Live Long and Prosper” hand gesture.

Attached is a photo of my oldest brother meeting his hero, Mr. Spock. It’s the only time I have ever seen my brother speechless.

Leonard Nimoy was a great actor, terrific director, poet and, what many people may not know, an outstanding photographer.

We will miss you Mr. Nimoy!
